It finally happened. We finally got fed up with our surplus roosters. In a flock of 25, 7 roosters is at least 5 too many (chicken math). The hens were not happy. So I built my chicken tractor that I had been envisioning for baby chicks and put out a sign.
Randy and I mused that it is the first time we have actually tried to sell something on our “farm.” Salesmanship is not one of my talents. We generally just give our extra eggs to friends. I would like to get better at marketing and sales, maybe roosters is a good place to start.
So back to these bachlors.
As you can see, they are not all too happy about their new environment. Our biggest and oldest rooster is a turkin/winedotte cross from last spring. He thinks he is all that, but with the ladies he falls flat. He has been chasing the hens incessantly. The other four are from last fall and have just started to come into their own. As a result, the hens have taken to hiding in the garage and anyplace else they can find peace.
The yard is a much calmer place this morning with just two roosters ruling the roost.
Well, the boys have moved on to their new homes. I started incubating a new batch of eggs. Hopefully, we will get mostly hens this time. We will see.
