This was a great art week for me and several other low country artists. Summerville Artist Guild had their All Member Show reception at Public Works Art Center on Thursday and Friday was the much anticipated Preservation Through Art opening the Charleston’s City Gallery. The Guild has about 37 beautiful entries on display at Public Works until the end of August. Stop by the South Gallery and vote for your favorite.
Friday I got to visit the City Gallery at Waterfront Park for the first time and was quite impressed. It is a lovely venue and the work was displayed very nicely. Over 40 artists participated in PAPA’s quest to visit and paint the historic places in Picturesque America.
I was excited to be with so many artists and historians and people who value natural and historic places. I was also pleased that four of our very own Guild members were part of such an important movement. The Charleston PAPA chapter will probably continue to paint the historical treasures around us and we can say we were there for the start.
Mary Hoffman is one of the Co Directors for the Charleston PAPA chapter. She is a master at plein aire and capturing light and expressions with confident brushstrokes. Her St. James Church painting was chosen to be in the new Picturesque America publication. phttps://preservationthroughart.org/products/sweetgrass-basket-weaver-by-mary-hoffman/
Summerville Artist Guild member Linda Pepper jumped into the PAPA paint outs and entered her view of St. James Church.
Kay Billisoly had at least two pieces in the show. I love how she captured the weathered hands of of skilled sweetgrass weaver.
Sheila Preston-Ford, your own JADEDjoyologist, had four entries in the show.
It was fun exploring the gallery and finding each theme representing a page in the ancient book and then spying my work with the rest of the art. I loved the collaboration aspect of the whole project. It is truly enriching to share inspiration and work with other artists who value the same things you do. I hope to find even more opportunities to create with other creatives.
