Famous PBS TV painter, Bob Ross, always said, “There are no mistakes, just happy little accidents.” In a world full of perfectionists, this is such a refreshing motto. I used to tell it to my students all the time. They would make one wrong mark and want to throw their paper away. I would encourage them to keep going and see if that mark might turn into something great. They were skeptical, but some powered through and ended up pleasantly surprised.
Perfection has never been my strong suit. However, going with the flow and making things work is kind of my super power. Sometimes it infuriates my husband, who prefers predictable outcomes. In rebuilding our broken house, there were many times we had to change course or make something we hadn't planned work to our advantage. Sometimes it was the house’s limitations, sometimes it was my faulty figuring.
My new art studio has been a place to reconcile some of that faulty figuring and even celebrate it.
Check out this amazing workspace! This beautiful work counter would not have been possible without some happy accidents and a little luck. The ten foot butcherblock counter was a wrong purchase for our kitchen 3 years ago. Since it was so heavy, I never got around to returning it. Eventually, I realized how perfectly it would fit in this space. But how to hold it up? I was going to piece together some old weathered cabinets that came with the house, until our amazing woodworker neighbor offered me a three foot cabinet he made. Wow! That, paired with an “extra piece“ left over from our kitchen and I have one amazing space.
You perfectionists might be noticing that the outlets are a little low, but I know a guy that can raise those just right.
So great!! I so excited it all coming together
