I woke up one morning this week to find a text from my California family from the night before. After I answered it I noticed the last conversation we had was from Easter of last year. It was kind of like reading a little time capsule. Here is where things were on April 16, 2022.
“He is risen,
He is risen indeed. Happy Easter!!!
As my new yard blooms, I think about all the little cousins, family and friends I am used to seeing scurrying around looking for eggs and goodies in my yard. Here is South Carolina, we are having a quieter Easter than we are used to, but it is still enjoyable. Last week we had a fun Sunday potluck and Easter egg hunt at church. The weather was exactly perfect for an outdoor service. It worked out well, because I think it might rain tomorrow for Easter service. Our house is waiting for plans and permits and we are learning patience and appreciation for what we have. I absolutely LOVE our outdoor space. It is so lush and green with flowering bushes and giant oaks and pines. The air is filled with the chorus of cardinals, mockingbirds and many other birds, including one that started singing through the night (which no one appreciates). Our chicken family is growing well except for a hawk that thinks they are a buffet. We explored different techniques for gardening with varied results and look forward to harvesting our own food this summer. Randy is awfully busy for a retired guy. He treats the home repair like a fulltime job. I keep telling him to go fishing and give himself a day off. I, on the other hand, am really good at chillaxing. I play hooky quite a bit and go to Bible study, bargain shop or work on my chicken shack. I hope to build a creative space to paint. Alishanee is enjoying school and has already been noticed for her artistic skills and basketball height.
I hope you are having an amazing spring and Easter. Feel free to send updates of your own. Texts and emails are great and we even like phone calls. I have trouble remembering to call at a good time (we are 3 hours ahead of you westerners).
God bless.”
So many changes have taken place this year, and yet, so much is the same. We are still trying to get our house finished and we are still serenaded by birds in a lush paradise. This year we have more company and that is such a blessing. I think our yard, or field, will be quite full of cute and joyful cousins running and searching for eggs. They can also gather eggs from our coop or play with baby chicks that we hatched from our incubator.
We hatched 16 little cuties three weeks ago and our incubator is full of activity today as 4 out of 30 eggs have hatched this morning.
Today is a cloudy Sunday and we expect more rain soon. That will be good for all our new fruit trees and vegetables we planted.
Our year old chickens can't wait to greet the new chicks. Welcome to the family.
