This morning I was sitting on my porch writing my artist pages. The morning was a soft gray with a quiet promise of impending rain. I was writing and watching the birds and then suddenly the clouds broke. The sun came out and everything around me was illuminated with sunny yellow green edges. I just love the way everywhere I looks in
spring with its new growth pop of color. That new green is the signature color of South Carolina. Plein air watercolor artist, Giselle Harrington, described it so well at a demo she did for the Summerville Artist Guild last year. I wish I remembered how she said it. She said a lot of people use a reddish green, which would be too muted and gray to capture it properly. She mentioned how the colors are different from place to place. She would know because she travels up and down the coast painting as she goes. Giselle has an excellent eye for color. Her comment got me thinking about the green of South Carolina compared to Northern California and I remembered the blue green hues of the mountains and the oaks and pines. She was so right.
